Luna Dance Institute has been offering family dance classes since we opened in 1992. Our relationship-based dance curriculum allows parents and children opportunities to learn about themselves and one another through movement play.
Parent-child Dance classes are offered through our Studio Lab program, as well as being at the heart of MPACT (Moving Parents and Children Together). In the Studio Lab, young children begin their dance studies through their attachment to parent or primary caregiver. This creates an environment of safety and support and allows parents the chance to learn about their children in a new way—by observing and interpreting their movement. In addition to being a lot of fun, parent-child dance classes are great preparation for very young children to eventually participate in a creative dance class on their own, learning to take direction from a new, adult teacher while staying true to their own ideas.
Luna’s relationship-based curriculum allows very young children and their parents to practice the dance of oneness and separateness in developmentally appropriate and engaging ways. Learn more about our approach as written up in May’s InDance magazine or see for yourself by trying a session. Class size limited to six families accepted on a first come-first served basis. Our fall 2014 – spring 2015 classes for Infants, Waddlers, Toddlers & Threes will be offered as follows:
Stay tuned for 0-15 month-old infants Parent-Child classes. Children at this age are just learning to sense, locomote and control their bodies in new ways. They enjoy moving and being moved by their parents, bouncing, turning, rolling and swinging. Tactile songs and dances help children learn where their bodies are in space, peek-a-boo and chase games remind them that they are not alone. Parents will have the opportunity to discover their dancing selves by moving with their children in these fun-filled classes.
February 17 – March 24, 2015 (Tuesdays 9:30-10:15) for waddling 16-24 month-olds and their parents. Babies 16-24 months are ON THE MOVE! Everything-all that climbing, carrying and racing can appear dangerous to the parent. Turn that “follow my child around” norm into a fun, playful dance activity. You’ll be with other parents doing the same thing. Click here to register. $100/6 week session.
April 14 – May 19, 2015 (Tuesdays 9:30-10:15) for toddling two-year-olds and their parents. At this stage children understand their separate self yet they are eager to share their discoveries and accomplishments with their parents. Luna staff will facilitate a play-based movement session for the children with lots of observation & witnessing activities for the parent. Toddlers need practice with fledgling social relations that help to relieve anxiety about aloneness in the world. This community of children & parents dancing together supports this natural development. Click here to register. $100/6 week session.
February 21 – March 28, 2015 (Saturdays 9:15-10:00). The three year old can definitely dance on his/her own yet will need to glance back to check in with the parent and also will naturally want their efforts to be witnessed by this most important person. Come join other families to investigate stop and go, locomotion, big and small movements, shape-making and many dance activities designed exclusively for the 3 year old. Includes dance storytime March 7 – families encouraged to come at 9 that day. Click here to register. $100/6 week session.
Parent-child classes are held at our Berkeley studios. For more information or registration, contact firstname.lastname@example.org, or visit our registration page. Saturday morning MPACT classes are also available at various times throughout the year.

March 7th (stay on for our Dance-a-thon!)
